Sílvio Cró was born in Funchal, where he took a degree in plastic arts at Madeira University, majoring in sculpture. In 1994, while he was still a student, he participated in his first exhibition entitled Embutidos (Inlays) at Funchal City Council. Since graduating, he has taken part in several collective exhibitions at Galeria Mouraria in Funchal – 9 Artistas (Nine artists), Madeira e Porto Santo 2ª edição (Madeira and Porto Santo, 2nd edition) (2003), Pequeno Formato (Small Format) (2005), Madeira e Porto Santo 5ª edição (Madeira and Porto Santo, 5th edition) (2006) and Acervo da Galeria (Gallery Collection) (2007). With his eye on the horizon, his works were shown in Belgium in 2004 at an exhibition entitled “Collection of Artists from Madeira”. Sílvio Cró, an artist of volume and form, graced Madeira with a cultural ceramics and design project, Ai Bate o Pé (Stamp Your Foot) in his home town in 2003. Continuing his individual work he created an installation, RIP – Ris’In Peace, for the Project Room at Galeria Mouraria, Funchal (2006). Young, energetic and creative, Cró is a born experimenter and his versatility leads him to work with different materials and techniques. In 1995, he received an honourable mention in a Christmas nativity show at Funchal City Council and later won 2nd prize in a sculpture competition entitled 30 Anos de Autonomia (Thirty Years of Autonomy). In 2006, a selection of his work was published in Livro de Ouro de Arte Contemporânea em Portugal by Fernando Infante de Carmo. An incursion into comic books resulted in his participation in 24 Hour Comics Day – Highlights by Nat Gertler, published in the United States. In the words of Victor Hugo, “Tout ce qui est dans la nature est dans l´art” and Sílvio Cró has achieved a unique, striking immortalisation of the senses of the human condition.
