Nini was born in Funchal on 24 July 1962. She graduated from IADE, Instituto de Artes Visuais, Design e Marketing, in Lisbon with a degree in interior design and painting and continued her training in places like New York, where she worked with internationally known designers such as David Easton and Stark Designers, at Casa Lopez in Paris, and in South Africa and Denmark.
She began her artistic career in the field of design, and ranks among the best interior designers in the world. She has featured in the last three of Andrew Martin’s reviews featuring the World’s Leading Designers. She is currently developing a line of furniture in Asia under the patent NINI16, to be marketed internationally.
A world citizen, Nini Andrade da Silva has no fixed abode but it is her homeland that provides inspiration for her huge paintings of stones, which are on show in several international collections, including the Berardo collection, in New York galleries and in a private collection in Ireland.
The stones, those round basalt pebbles found on the beaches in Madeira, are this artist’s favourite subject, which she paints on extremely large canvases.
She had two exhibitions at the Inquisição art gallery in 1998 and 1999 and at the Museu da Electricidade and Museu de Arte Contemporânea in Funchal. In 2000 her work was on show at Gare Marítima de Alcântara and in 2001 at Cordoaria Nacional in Lisbon. In 2002, her works were part of a collective exhibition in Barcelona and more recently, in 2006, at Palácio do Pombal (IADE) in Lisbon.
She is currently at the height of her career. She has several exhibitions scheduled for 2008 in Saudi Arabia, New York, Rome, New Delhi and Miami.
