Biography

He was born in Madeira and studied at The Art Students League in 1978 and the National Academy of Design School of Fine Arts in 1982. He then returned to Funchal and developed a highly singular style of painting ranging from lyrical abstractionism to surrealism. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was often invited to show his work by the Regional Department of Tourism and Culture, and his exhibitions had record numbers of visitors. Loudly acclaimed and severely criticised, his art is a critique of global society and features in private collections in Spain, Great Britain and Finland. In Portugal, he not only has works in private collections like the Mário Soares Foundation and the Ouro Negro - Raul Indipwo Foundation, but the Portuguese President, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, also owns some of his works. He also has works at MAC – Museu de Arte Contemporânea in Funchal and Universo de Memórias, João Carlos Abreu, in Madeira. In his incursions into art, Aguiar felt the need to learn more conservation and restoration techniques, although he had already learned by himself and practised them empirically. This new challenge took him to Italy, where he studied restoration and worked on several sacred art recovery projects. On returning home, the artist devoted himself to painting, with brief experiments in sculpture, while also doing restoration work, one of his passions.
