American artist whose career began in the 70s, a period in which sensitisation in terms of perception, the body and the environment were dominant in the artistic milieu. He studied at the California Institute of Arts and, in 1973, he had his first one-man show in Massachusetts. From its beginning, his career has been marked by experiments with signs and symbols transmitted by the mass media. Using the analysis of these symbols as a starting point, the artist's work has spread into spatial dimensions, initially with projects intended for public spaces and, later, in a more concrete manner with a project conceived over a number of years, the City Project, which deals with virtual urban spaces through the design of open installations and videos. These are schematic forms, with simple motifs and clearly comprehensible projects containing symbolic content. In 1982 and 1997, Mullican took part in Documenta 7 and 10, in Kassel. In 1997, he also he took part in an exhibition at the Stedelijk Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven. In the year 2000, his work will be presented at the Oxford Museum of Modern Art and the Serralves Foundation in Oporto. He currently lives and works in New York.
