Portuguese painter born in Figueira da Foz. He studied painting at the ESBAL. In 1959 he visits Paris and discovers the abstract and gestual artwork of Soulages and Hartung. He worked for one year at Jean Lurçat's atelier, where he developed knowledge on tapestry and painting, being influenced by the op art movement, of which he was one of the first introducers in Portugal. He uses textures and colours that mix old and new tiles to create optical effects, in architectonic spaces, for instance in the facade of the factory Sociedade Central de Cerveja, in Vialonga, in the subway Campo Grande Subway station, Lisbon, in the facades of the Faculdade de Ciências and Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in Almada, in the viaduct of the Campo Grande Train Station, in the Airport of Macau, China, among others.
