British painter who was awarded the Turner Prize in 1998. Chris Ofili's painting combines several media and uses unusual materials: paint, beads, collaged elements, glitter dots and - the most unconventional - elephant dung. Ofili's images are playful and discordant, they forge a connection between his English art school training and his African ancestry and between black urban culture and the artist's experience of Zimbabwe. Ofili uses personal imagery to draw attention to cultural issues.
