Polish painter, born and died in Warsaw. 1913-1919 Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. 1924 A founder-member of the Constructivist, Suprematist and Cubist group Blok, and editor of their magazine. Friendships with M. Seuphor and Mondrian. After an early Cubist and Purist phase, he adopted the geometric abstract style of Mondrian. 1926 Collaborated with the avant-garde group Praesens. Interior decorations and book designs in a Neo-Plastic style. Joined Cercle et Carré in 1932 and Abstraction-Création in 1930. From 1929-1933 experimental phase, in which he tried to combine the styles of Neo-Plasticism and Unism. After World War II, resumed geometric abstract painting. 1959-1964 Series of white metal reliefs: systematic variations on a square. 1974 Developed the idea of a series of white paintings with arrangements of black lines. 1980 Set up an artist exchange programme between Poland and America.
