Born in Greenville, Mississippi, Valerie Jaudon attended the Mississippi State University for Women, the Memphis Academy of Art, the University of the Americas in Mexico City, and St. Martins School of Art in London. Jaudon has exhibited widely as a painter. Her previous public art projects include metal fence/screens for the New York City MTA, at the Lexington Avenue IRT Subway Station at 23rd Street. Valerie Jaudon first became known in the 70s as one of the early proponents of the Pattern and Decoration Movement. Her work reflects the movement’s interest in complexity, ornamental structures and culture-historical references. Jaudon’s work was developed in the context of the ideas of Minimal, Conceptual and Environmental Art and represents a witty and original take on the issue of abstraction in the late modern period.
