British painter born in London. From 1947-50 studied at St. Martin's School of Art and 1950-54 at Royal College of Art. In 1956 first one-person exhibition, of several, at the Zwemmer Gallery. In 1956 included in John Berger's "Looking Forward" exhibition at the South London Art Gallery. In 1954-73 taught at St. Martin's School of Art. In 1972 was elected Royal Academician. Selected exhibitions: 1980 One Man exhibition (of several), at Gallery 10, London; 1984 "The forgotten Fifties", Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield. Retrospective exhibition, at the Minories, Colchester and touring. 1989: Retrospective "Working Drawings and Sketch Books" at The Fitwilliam Museum, Cambridge; 1991 "The Kitchen Sink Painters", The Mayor Gallery, London.
