Biography

Currently lives and works in Lisbon. João Paulo Feliciano is a visual artist and musician, with a diploma in Modern Language and Literature from the University of Lisbon. Following an untrodden path, has lead João Paulo Feliciano to experimenting in multiple forms of expression. However it is from his work as an artist that João Paulo Feliciano has evolved his own kind of language. In his body of work we can find installations, objects, painting, drawing, photography, film, light, music (including rock, improvised music, experimental music and techno), graphic design, architecture and performance. He has exposed his work frequently since 1984. Between several individuals and collective expositions; selected individual shows include “The Blues Quartet” in Contemporary Arts Centre, Cincinnati, USA (2007), “The Possibility of Everything: João Paulo Feliciano, selected works 1989-1994” (major survey show), Culturgest, Lisbon (2006) and solo show at the Serralves Museum contemporary Art, Oporto, (2004). Distinguished by his participation in XXVI Bienal of São Paulo, Brasil (2004), or in the exposition “Sonic Boom-The Art of Sound” Hayward Gallery, London (2002) He was the artistic director for the show “Acqua Matrix” (Expo ’98, Lisbon). Since 1990 he works in collaboration with the musician Rafael Toral in the project “No Noise Reduction” and from 1989 to 1998, he was an integral part of the band “Tina and the Top Ten”. In his musical career he has had many collaborations with musicians such as; Lee Ronaldo (South Youth) Phill Niblock, David Toop, Christian Fennez, Spancer Yeh (Burning Star Core, Elliot Earls (The AppoloProgram), Amom Tobim and Burnt Friedman.
