Biography

American painter, born in Buffalo. Studied at the New School for Social Research in New York in 1953-54 and at Mexico City College from 1957 to 1959. Took his subjects from city life, especially highway and automobile imagery; the works became less abstract by the 1970s. In 1961, first one-person exhibition, Long Island University, NY; 1964, American Landscape Painting, MoMA, New York, New Realism, Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, 1965, Galerie Sonnabend, Paris, 1976, American Art since 1945, MoMA. 1963-68 Taught at School of Visual Arts, New York. 1971 ICA, Philadelphia, 1 Retrospective: Burchfield Center, Western New York Forum for American Art, Buffalo, New York (1979). In 1983 became Graduate Instructor at School of Visual Arts, New York. Lived in New York until 1968, when he moved for a short period to Ithaca, NY, to teach at Cornell University. Now Lives in Kenoza Lake, New York.
