Biography

Miguel Palma, born in Lisbon, is emblematic of the Portuguese artists of his generation. In his works, he has questioned systematically the place of technology in a world in which consumerism and spectacle are the dominant ideologies.  Focusing in the construction of machines, mechanisms and the miniature duplication of societies, the artist constantly activates and reactivates the notions of game and toy, conveying a gloomy vision of the contemporary world: a world that is frequently dysfunctional, closed upon itself, on the path of destruction and death. He has presented his work since 1990, both in Portugal (Fundação Serralves, Culturgest, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Centro Cultural de Belém, Galeria Baginski,Galeria Graça Brandão, Galeria Cristina Guerra, Museu do Chiado) and abroad, (Galerie Almine Rech, Centre de Création Contemporain de Tours, Nouveau Musée/Institut d'Art Contemporain de Villeurbanne, France; MUDAM, Luxemburg; Museu Pateo Herreriano, Spain; Location One, ISE Foundation, Satori Gallery, Faulconer Gallery, USA; Melbourne International Art Biennial, Australia; Kunsthalle Wien, Austria). At the end of 2008, he has presented also his works at Villa Arson, in Nice, France (Acclimatation / Pinturas Catalíticas and Ecossistema), and at the New Orleans Biennale (Prospect.1 / RESCUE GAMES), folowing exhibitions at Museu do Neo Realismo, Museu da Cidade de Lisboa and the Appleton Square gallery. Miguel Palma is resident artist in the U.S.A., in 2009.
