Biography

French painter. Between 1931 and 1932, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lille and in Paris. Between 1936 and 1956, he travelled to Brussels and Amsterdam to study the work of Rembrandt and Malevich and later to Italy, where he was fascinated with the work of Bellini and Giorgine. He also visited Munich, where he saw exhibitions of Klee and Kandinsky. After 1958 he settled in Wasquehal, a calm and quiet place in teh North of France that became his reference point. Between 1965 and 1972, he produced several graphic works, mostly gouaches and paintings in acrylic and oil trying to establish a new painting technique. He made several trips to New York and Washington where he was strongly influenced by Rothko's paintings. In 1977, he participated in a exhibition at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lille and, in 1980, the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst in Ghent held a major retrospective exhibition of his work. In 1992, he participated in Documenta 9 in Kassel.
