Biography
Born in Wervik, Belgium, lives in Ghent and London. Wim Delvoye's work gives ample proof of his great power of imagination. By taking up ordinary implements and appliances and coating them with a new skin (ironing boards decorated with blazonry, shovel, gas canisters made of Delft faïence, a concrete mixer carved in wood) he calls forth a serious of free associations, ranging from historical references over artistic interpretations to economical consequences. Delvoye's art calls the attention to the middle class attraction for kitsch through popular humour. His work gained international recognition at the Dokumenta IX of 1992 in Kassel. In 1998, he had a one-man exhibition at the Openluchtmuseum voor Beeldhouwkunst (the open-air sculpture museum Middelheim).
