Biography

Born in Vichy, in 1925, Gérard Castello-Lopes lived in Lisbon, Cascais, Strasbourg and Paris. He was founding partner of Centro Português de Cinema. In 1956 he became interested and learned photography as an autodidact, based, on one hand, on a natural impulse to represent reality, and on the other hand on a strong interest in the visual or figurative arts, such as painting, sculpture, cinema and photography itself. He established a direction regarding the preferential object of his activity as photographer (taking the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson as paradigm), continuously confronting the results of his production with the photographic corpus he found in specialized foreign magazines and books, faced with the inexistence or the ignorance of an equivalent corpus in Portugal.  Selection of solo exhibitions 1982 Fotografias de 1956 a 1982, Galeria Ether, Lisbon 1986 Insignificâncias, Centro de Arte Moderna, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon 1994 Photographie, Centre Cultural Gulbenkian, Paris 1996 Simulacro e Trompe l’Oeil, Museu Gulbenkian, Lisbon 1997 Espant’Homens, Celeiro da Fundação de Serralves, Porto 1998 From people to Paradox, Juan Carlos Center of the New York University 1999 Gérard Castello-Lopes Photographs, Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard University Cambridge MA, USA 2000 Rumor da Água, Galeria Módulo, Centro Difusor de Arte, Lisbon 2003 Vedere- Il sogno di una Vita at the Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia, Italy 2003 David, Centre Calouste Gulbenkian, Paris 2004 Oui Non, Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon, Portugal 2008 Oui Non, Museu Valencià de la Il.lustració i de la Modernitat, Valencia, Spain.
