Biography
The American painter, sculptor, designer, illustrator and poet, Jim Dine studied at the Arts Academy between 1951 and 1953 and, later, at the Boston Museum School and Ohio University. In 1958, he moved to New York, where he first became involved in the art world through the theatrical events, Happenings (1959-60), installations and environments, producing a counter-movement to the predominance of Abstract Expressionism. A habitual visitor at engravers and casting workshops, he has set up temporary studios in various American cities so as to be able to involve himself in various projects, such as organising exhibitions. In 1964, he took part in the Venice Biennale and, in 1968 and 1977, in Documenta 4 and 7 in Kassel. His paintings are visually combined with collages, assemblages and three-dimensional objects, although with a personal and manual character which distinguishes them from the mechanically produced style of painting characteristic of Pop Art.
