Biography

Born in Lisbon. Studied at Escola António Arroio in 1950, and at Lisbon School of Fine Arts, where he met the group with whom he later founded KWY, in Paris: Lourdes Castro, René Bèrtholo, Costa Pinheiro, Gonçalo Duarte and João Vieira. He exhibited for the first time in 1954, at Centro Nacional de Cultura and at VIII General Exhibition of Fine Arts, SNBA. In 1960 he received a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation scholarship and went to Paris, where he lived until 1969, taking part in the exhibitions and initiatives of the KWY Group. He participated at the I General Exhibition of Fine Arts Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, em 1957. He helped to found the Movement for Renewing Religious Art (MRAR). His work was then integrated into architectural projects. As from 1965, Escada started experimenting with other kinds of material, doubling paper, metal and acrylic sheeting and cutting out figures from them so as to create painting-objects. He exhibited in Portugal: in 1965, at Gallery Divulgação, and, in 1967, at Gallery Buchholz (Novas Iconologias) at Gallery Quadrante (The object). In France, he participates at the 17ème Salon de la Jeune Peinture (Paris) and publishes Les Cinq Signes, in KWY. He returns to Portugal in 1968 and dies in 1980. A retrospective of his work is organized later by the Secretary of State for Culture.
