Biography
Born in Kent, graduated from Goldsmiths College in 1988. Hume is part of a generation of artists who have become internationally recognised since their participation in Damien Hirst's "Freeze" exhibition in London. In a first phase his work was influenced by Conceptual art practices, like the Door series. These monochromatic paintings were executed in high gloss enamel on canvas or alumium panels, which gave them a reflective surface. Hume said '..it reflects the environment which the works are shown in.. everything would be reflected within the painting, including yourself...So they made you think about light and about where the paintings begin and end.' In 1996 he was the British representative at the São Paulo Biennale, in 1999 represented Britain at the Venice Biennale and was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2001. He had solo exhibitions at Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht and the ICA in London. In 1997 he participated in the show: "Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection". He lives and works in London and upstate New York, USA.
