Biography
British sculptor of Indian birth. Kapoor was part of a generation of British sculptors who came to be recognised by the international artistic circle in the mid 80s. His work, however, is distinguished from that of his contemporaries through the hermetic lyricism that characterises it. His frequent trips to India fill his sculptures with strong spiritual and mythological resonance. Kapoor uses natural materials such as sandstone, marble and slate. At the beginning of the 90s, he produced sculptures where he perforated the surface of vertically placed stones, giving these works a more enigmatic feel. He blends different materials in meditative structures, where attention is focused on qualities of balance and inner well-being.
