Biography

Born Saint Ouen, Paris.  1929-32 Studied at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. 1936-38: Moved to Amiens after death of his father to maintain family business. 1937: exhibited at Galerie Breteau, Paris. 1941: Participated in "Jeunes Peintres de Tradition Française," Galerie Braun, Paris. 1943: "Douze peintres d'aujord'hui," Galerie de France, Paris. In 1946 he met Brancusi. 1949: First one-man exhibitions: Galerie Jeanne Bucher, Paris; Galerie de France, Paris (where he subsequently exhibited frequently). 1951: First one-person exhibition abroad, Galerie Apollo, Brussels. 1953: Galerie Pierre Matisse, New York. Awarded first prize for painting, Sao Paolo Biennale. 1955: Galerie Blanche, Stockholm (with Jean Le Moal); Institute Francais, Copenhagen (with Le Moal); Musee de Tourcoing, Tourcoing; Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; Stedelijk, Eindhoven. Awarded First Prize for Painting, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh. "New Decade," MoMA; "documenta," Kassel (and 1959). 1958: Kestner-Gesellchaft, Hannover. Venice Biennale (and 1960). 1964: First one-man exhibition in US: Philips Collection, Washington, DC; University of Indiana, Notre Dame. 1965: Kunstnernes, Oslo; Konsthall, Lund, Sweden. 1968: Retrospective, Maison de la Culture, Amiens (travelled to Rennes, Montpelier, Bourges, Toulouse). 1969-70: Retrospective, Musee de Metz, Luxembourg (travelled to Treves, Breme, Bellelav, Dijon, Sochaux). 1971-72: ARC. 1972-73: Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon. 1976: Retrospective, Musee Dynamique, Dakar. 1981: Retrospective, Musee de la Poste, Paris. 1986: Collaborated with Jean Bazaine to create windows for the Cathedral of Saint-Die. 1988: Elac, Lyon (travelled to Besancou, Luxembourg, Halmstad, Dublin). "Les annees 50," Pompidou. 1989: Centre Culturel, Issoire; Musée Boucher de Pertnes, Abbeville. 1992: Grand Palais, Paris. 1993: Retrospective of stained glass work, Centre International du Vitrail, Chatres. 1994: Musee des Beaux Arts, Brussels; Abbaye du Ronceray, France; Musée de la Tapisserie, Angers, France.
