Biography
American painter and sculptor, born in Los Angeles, California, living and working in New York. The scale of the objects he chooses are neither arbitrary nor casual. Produced oversized, these objects have no relation to normal reality but lay claim to another perception of reality. His series Surrogate Paintings, 1978-1991, Perfect Vehicles, (Aperto 88 XLIII Venice Biennale) give the impression of industrial mass production. McCollum's recent groups differ from the earlier ones in their reference to natural history. The attempt to preserve the past in collections is carried to absurdity here through the serial principle: the rare relic of antiquity is endlessly repeated in countless ranks and rows. 1989, solo exhibition: Over 10,000 Individual Works, Stedelijk van Abbenmuseum Museum, Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
