Biography
The Italian sculptor, Melotti studied at the Accademia di Brera in Milan where he met Lucio Fontana, whose artistic career was developing along parallel lines. Just as Fontana, Melotti combined conceptual purity with a very strong visual element in his work. The ceramic decoration of his work together with a tendency towards a Informal Art, led to the temporary eclipse of his reputation. At the end of the 60s, with the growth of Conceptual Art, the critics were again ready to appreciate his work which was characterised by a healthy balance between the physical and the metaphysical. In this period, he produced works which were essentially made out of clothes and knitted nets, whose patterns conveyed the illusion of vibration and were very well-received by the international public.
