Julie Roberts, in 1977, on a BBC's art programme, described her interest for themes - even if they are hidden behind an object or an interior - devoted to the body and the social conditions of how men and women are represented in our culture. Exemplifying this in a direct way she painted Anatomical Marriage; Male, Female (1997). While the male figure's position is related to a classical intellectual pose, the female shows an idealized Botticelli-like woman with long fair hair, being represented in a pose of sexual affection. In an irritating direct way, the depicted bodies disturb our expectations of representations of nudes in the context of art. Within the tableaux, she questions the use and abuse of power. In general her themes show an interest from a feminist point of view, reflecting institutional and social systems, icons representing the female and the male form within our society.
