American painter and designer. He studied at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, between 1973 and 1975. He worked for the art department of a publisher of novels and pornographic magazines, collecting photographs from archives which he later used as a basic source for his paintings. After creating performances and installations, he finally decided in 1979 to concentrate on painting. Despite the fact that he knew the work of Picabia, his series Transparencies in particular, Salle's work is more easily compared with that of Rosenquist or Polke. In 1982, he was at documenta 7 in Kassel and, in 1985, he took part in the Paris Nouveau Biennale. In 1986, he had a one-man show at the Whitney Museum of Modern Art in New York and took part in the exhibition, Europe/America at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne. During the 80s and at the beginning of the 90s, he was one of the most influential painters working in a representational style. In 1994, another exhibition was devoted to his work, at the Mary Boone Gallery in New York.
