Biography
Belgian painter, sculptor, designer and writer. He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (1913-17), where his academic paintings received numerous prizes. Simultaneously, he explored Abstract Art, being one of the foremost Belgian practitioners. In 1920, he joined the group of Parisian artists, L'Effort Moderne, promoted by L. Rosenberg. Servranckx was a strong supporter of Abstraction as a way of transcending the simple imitation of appearances and opposing everything that was conceived in merely decorative terms. He painted regularly according to a style representational of form, showing his capacities as a conventional painter. Towards the end of his career, he continued painting in the same style and also began to make collages which were, at times, close to those of Kurt Schwitters.
