Biography
American sculptor of British birth. He studied History at Oxford University (1955-58) and Sculpture at the Central School of Art and Design and St Martin's School of Art (1959-60) in London. Like Philip King and other British sculptors, Tucker favoured, at the beginning of his career, simple geometrical forms and industrial materials such as fibre glass and sheet metal painted in luminous colours, freeing the sculpture from its representative function. In the 70s, he produced larger, more elegant works that responded to gravity and the atmosphere. In 1977, he moved to the United States and took American citizenship. At the beginning of the 80s, he was particularly interested in the creation of a tension between open spaces and masses. At the end of the decade, he returned to modelling, bringing mass to the heart of figuration in grand, intimidating bronzes.
