Biography
German sculptor and stage designer. He studied at the Kunstakademie in Berlin-Weissensse between 1949 and 1953, and began working within Social Realism. In 1957, he produced his first nail structures. He incorporated materials such as cork and cardboard tubes in his paintings. In 1958, he began producing circular, nail formations which led, in 1981, to his rotating luminous discs. In the same year, he took part in the exhibition, Das rote Bild realizada at Otto Piene's studio and, in 1961, joined the Zero group. In 1964-77, he took part in Documenta 3, 4 and 7 in Kassel. After 1967, his work was influenced by Land, Body and Conceptual Art. In 1970, he took part in the Venice Biennale. Since 1974, Uecker has designed various opera productions such as Fidelio (Bremen), Parsifal (Stuttgart, 1976) and Lohengrin (Bayreuth Festival, 1979). He has also held major one-man shows: in 1983 at the Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf; in 1987 at the Museu Wihelm-Hack in Ludwigshafen and, in 1992, at the Museu des 20 Jahrhunderts, in Vienna.
