Biography

Portuguese artist, was born in Coimbra and grew up in the island of S. Miguel in the Azores. Lives in Lisbon. She studied painting at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa (ESBAL). Ana Vieira exhibited her first objects in 1967. Her research involves the image and its representation, absent figures replaced by its shadows, sometimes the objects include mirrors that play with its reflection. In Ana Vieira’s environments sometimes she dematerialises poetically the house or deals ironically with the status of women (“Holy Domestic Peace, Domesticated”, 1977 and “Washing linel”, 1982). Her scenographies can also be seen outside the exhibition rooms, as in the case of “Constellation of Pisces”. Solo exhibitions (selection): 1968 Gal. Quadante; 1973 "Ambiente" AR.CO; 1974 Gal. Judite Dacruz; 1978 "Hiding-Unhiding”, Gal. Quadrum; 1991 “Diary of five days”, Centro Nacional de Cultura; 1997 "Study for a landscape", Sala do Veado, Museu Nacional de História Natural. Group exhibitions (selection): 1966 Exposição de Maio, SNBA; 1968 “O Objecto” Gal. Quadrante; 1972 and 1974 Expo-Aica; 1975 Figuração, Hoje? 1976 Arte Portoghese Contemporanea Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Rome 1977 “Alternativa Zero”, Gal.Nac. de Arte Moderna, Belém, Lisbon, 1986 O imaginário na Cidade, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. In 1999 the Serrralves Foundation has shown a retrospective of the artist’s work.
