Biography

Born in Lisbon. Attended António Arroio School (1934-41), and the Schools of Fine Arts of Lisbon and Oporto in 1942 and 1945. Having moved to Paris in 1963, where he has lived even since. From 1947 to the present days he held several solo exhibitions in galleries in Oporto, Lisbon and Paris. The first retrospective of his work was shown at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, after at the Soares dos Reis Museum, in Oporto and 1979, at the Maison de la Culture de Wollüwe Saint Pierre (Brussels). In 1979, he painted the series Os Tigres, based on illustrations for Rose et Bleu by Jorge Luis Borges. Other cycles of his work are Dom Quixote, Ulisses, and recently, the story of the 3 little pigs, and Frida Khalo. Several exhibitions followed in exhibitions at Glemeninge Gal., in Glemmingebro (1980), Paris (Gellechasse Gal. 1981 e 1984 e Lisbon. He was active illustrator and scenographer as well. Since 1953 he has represented Portugal at the Biennales of S. Paulo (1953, 1975 and 1984) and Tokyo (1957). He realized the tiles for the Subway Station “Alto dos Moínhos”, in Lisbon. He was awarded the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Prize for Engraving (1957) and First Prize for Painting (1961). He has published Discours sur la cécité des peintres e Catch-thèmes e variations (1984) In 2002 he had an anthological exhibition at the Aveiro Cultural Centre.
