Biography

Portuguese artist born in Lisbon, graduated in Painting at the Fine Arts School of Lisbon (ESBAL). From the beginning of her art career, in 1961, Helena Almeida has unceasingly questioned the traditional means of art, painting above all. This reflection is at the same time accompanied by the constant practice of the photographic self-representation. Her husband, the architect and artist Artur Rosa took the photographs. In 1967, she presented her first one-woman show at the Galeria Buchholz, in which painting already looked like wanting "to come out" or "to fall" according to the artist's words. Afterwards, Helena Almeida began to inhabit her work (Inhabited Paintings), displaying and using her own body (body art and performance), and abolishing disciplinary frontiers in art. A Selection of solo exhibitions: Representative of Portugal in the Venice Biennale 82; 1983 Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian; 1989 Richard Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh; 1991 Centre d'Art de Saint Vicent, Herblay, Paris.
