In spite of not having been specifically trained in this area, Carl Buchheister began painting in 1919. His friendship with Kurt Schwitters, as from 1921, signalled not only a period of artistic renovation but also his participation in international Constructivism activity. These two artists, were present at the foundation of the Hannover group in 1927 and the close contact with the Dessau Bauhaus, as well as De Stijl artists brought a new dynamism and impulse to Constructivism. After 1933, Buchheister was denounced by the Nazis as a degenerate artist and forbidden to paint. After the Second World War, working alone, he returned to abstract composition in which he combined collage with the painting of Informal Art. He founded the North-East German artists' association and, as from 1954, he taught at the Meisterschule in Hannover.
