Biography

Peter Hutchinson, born in England in 1930, has been living and working in Provincetown, Massachusetts, since 1953. He is one of the pioneers of Land Art. In his works Peter Hutchinson unites two passions that determine his life from an artistic point of view – travel, and the rearing and tending of plants quite in the spirit of the British concept of ‘gardening’. The contrast between ‘wild nature’ and ‘untamed mountains’ on the one hand and ‘jardins’ and ‘landscapes’ on the other, is something he is continually aware of. The colour photographs he takes during his travels (landscapes – mountain ranges, cliffs, meadows, hills; skies, seas/lakes, architecture, fauna and flora – trees, bushes, shrubs, flowering plants) are assembled into coherent collages in rectangular format, then to be worked on with oil pastels or gouache. He is represented at the Musée d’Art Moderne/Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basle, the National Gallery of Art, Washington and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
