Biography
Portuguese artist, born in Lisbon. Graduated in Painting at the Fine Arts School of Lisbon (ESBAL), post-graduate studies at the The Slade School of Fine Art, Londres (1974). Monochrome and the void are the essence of his work. Calhau had is first exhibition in 1968, and afirmed his art by developing engraving (he participated at VIII Internationl Engraving Biennale, Ljbljana, Yugoslavia, and Prints Biennale, Tokyo, 1969) and using, at the same time, drawing, photography, S8 film, video, whilst painting. In the 80's he develops the idea on medium and shape, scale and architecture of space, employing, among other materials, iron and neon. Solo exhibitions (selection) 1968 "Gravuras brancas" Gal.
