Biography

Nicolas Leiva was born in Tucuman, Argentina. In 1983 he graduated from the Faculty of Arts at the Universidad Nacional in Tucuman and went on to continue his studies and teach in Buenos Aires. Leiva, who has always conceived of his career in global terms, exhibited for the first time outside Argentina in 1989, at the Atma Gallery in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was there his works first caught the eye of art critic and poet, Ricardo Pau-Llosa. In 1990 Leiva moved to Miami, Since 1996, Leiva has broadened his range of genres beyond painting and drawing to ceramics as well the pictorial intervention of industrial surfaces, such as automobiles, clothing, motorcycles and surfboards. He spent the summer of 1999 producing ceramics at the studio of Graciana Pompilli. Presently he divides his time between Miami - his own studio - and Faenza - in Bottega Gatti, Italy. Leiva's major solo exhibitions include the Beijing International Biennale of Art, Beijing, China, 2003, Disegnare il marmo", Carrara, Italy, Paolo Marcolongo Gallery, Padova, Italy, 2004. Selected group exhibitions include, Art Miami, ArteBa, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Art Palm Beach, International Art Biennale, Cuenca, Ecuador. His work appears in the public collections of Maria Zambrano, Malaga, Spain, MALBA, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Museum of Fine Arts of Tucuman, Argentina, Fundacion Garcia Lorca, Madrid, Spain, to list a few.
