The painter was born in Conception, Chile. In 1973 he entered La Escuela de Bellas Artes at the University of Chile, becoming an adjunct professor of drawing in 1977. The following year, he received his master's degree in Painting. He traveled to Madrid in 1979 to study anatomy and drawing in the Facultad de Bellas Artes at the Universidad Complutense. Three years later, he acquired Spanish citizenship and official residency. He held his first solo exhibition in Europe in 1986 and has since shown in galleries, art fairs and collections in Spain, Germany, Italy and the United States. In 1989, Muñoz Vera formed a multidisciplinary studio on the outskirts of Madrid; one that summoned Spanish and foreign artists for artistic activities and classes, including printmaking, drawing, painting, theater, and design. Together with painter Carmen Spinola, Muñoz Vera officially founded Contemporary Art and Authors, under the acronym ARAUCAN. There, Muñoz Vera taught drawing and painting and also became Vice President in 1996. The local government in Madrid sponsored Guillermo Muñoz Vera’s first retrospective exhibition in 2000 at the Centro Cultural de la Villa. Showcased there was 27 years of the artist’s oeuvre, through more than 140 works consigned from private collections all over the world. In 2003, he painted and donated two works for the Palacio de la Moneda, Chile, to contribute to the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the death of President Salvador Allende and condemnation of the start of the dictatorship led by Pinochet in September 1973.
