Biography

He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles between 1957 and 1959, Bell has worked in painting and sculpture. His paintings, produced with mirroring and transparent glass as well as canvas, create an optical ambiguity through the image of the observer being reflected. Disappointed by the limits of two-dimensional art, Bell began to make multi-faceted boxes with the same materials as in his previous works but that accentuated the optical complexity already present in his work. At the end of the 60s, he gave up this kind of work to produce pure glass boxes whose sides were lined with various types of metal creating fields of colour. Since 1972, he has above all focused on exterior works conceived in glass lined with metal.
