Biography

Born in Lisbon. He attended the Antóno Arroio School of Decorative Arts and studied music with the composer Fernando Lopes Graça. As a poet, he published his first book of poems in 1942 and in the same year started his activity in the field of arts. On 1947 he met in Paris André Breton, Henri Pastoureau and Victor Brauner, that would have a decisive influence on him. That same year he co- founded the Lisbon Surrealist Group which he abandoned a year later after a polemical dispute, only to join another group, “The Surrealists” together with other artists. Visual and literary references run through the various periods of his work. Painting is the field that he has dedicated himself most, showing regularly. He received “EDP Prize” in 2002.
