American artist who has worked in the painting and design fields. He studied at the California Institute of Arts in Valencia, in 1972 and taught, between 1974 and 1978, at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. After an initial abstract phase, he opted for figurative painting. He created the Fisher Family whose members are the main figures in many of his paintings. He took part in documenta 8 in 1987, in Kassel. In 1991, he exhibited at the Louisiana Museum for Modern Art. Fischl's portraits of everyday life and leisure activities highlight the underlining ambiguity of American politics, society and lifestyle.
