Poet, essayst, novelist, painter and art critic, was born in Lisbon where he graduated in Romanic Philology. He accomplished an important role in the Portuguese neo-realism, as one of the leading figures and theoritians of this movement. After the 25th April 1974 he was Guest Professor of the Lisbon Art and Language Faculty.
