Biography

Born in Abenras, Denmark. 1921-1922  she was pupil of Hans Hofmann, in Munich. She went to Berlin and worked under Moholy-Nagy. In 1923 exhibited at the Grosse Berliner KunstSusstellung (with the Novembergruppe) and studied with Archipenko. The meeting with these two artists were decisive for her painting. In 1924 she was a student of Léger at the Académie Moderne, and exhibited at the Maison Watteau with the Atelier Fernand Léger. When Clausen became part of the Parisian avant-garde, her independent experiments were of great importance to her fellow artists. Clausen passed through most of the stages of the development of modern art, and there were elements of Neue Sachlichkeit, Constructivism, Cubism, Neo-platicism, Surrealism and Purism in her paintings, though her greatest influence was Léger. 1926-27 Salon des Indépendants, International Exhibition of Modern Art at the Anderson Galleries; 1929 Salon d'art français indépendant. Became friends with Seuphor and Mondrian, exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, with Cercle et Carré group. 1930 AC; Cubism, Post-cubism, Constructivism, Surrealism, sur-impressionism. In 1932, she returned to Denmark. One-person show at the Binger Gallery in Copenhagen; 1935 Cubism-Surrealism exhibition in Copenhagen. 1937 Surrealism in the North, in Lund. Since then her work has been seen at numerous exhibitions.
