Biography
Portuguese sculptor born in Oporto. He studied painting at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. His first one-man exhibition was held in 1983. He started working with industrially cut stone and sculpted extremely large pieces of work. He creates "Stack-pieces" made of marble slabs he placed one on top of the other, statues, columns, tombs, ruins - in relation with time and death. In his most recent work he uses other materials like plaster-of-Paris, clay mould, and bronze and has been engaged in exploring the relationship between sculpture and objects used in daily life, and the way everything connects up with the surrounding space. Since 1991 he has been working on engravings in the Tristan Barbara workshops in Barcelona. He participated at the Stone Sculpture Simposium, Évora, and in the International Stone Scupture Simposium, Oporto, 1985.
