Biography
Born in Abinger, Surrey. From 1951-54 studied at St. Martin’s School of Art, London, and 1954-57 Royal College of Art, London. 1953 Young Contemporaries, RBA Galleries, London (and 1954, 1956, 1957). 1957 New Trends in British Art, New York Art Foundation, Rome. 1958 First one-person exhibition, Gimpel Fils, London. Selected exhibitions: 1958 British Painting, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, 1959 Place, ICA, London, 1965 First one-person exhibition in US, Robert Elkon Gallery, New York, 1968 Prospect ’68, Düsseldorf. In 1967 he was visiting professor, Minneapolis Institute of Fine Art. Retrospectives in 1973 Tate Gallery, London, Würtembergischer Kunstverein, Stuttgart, Städtisches Museum, Leverkusen. 1979 Bernard Jacobsen Gallery, New York. 1987 Fine Arts Gallery, University of California, Irvine. Exhibition Road Painters at the Royal College of Art, Royal College of Art, London. 1993 The Sixties Art Scene in London, Barbican Art Gallery, London.
