Biography
Icelandic painter born Gudmundur Gudmundsson in Olafsvik. From 1949-51 studied at the Art Academy in Reykjavik, 1952-54 mural painting at Oslo Academy and 1955-58 at Art Academy in Florence and mosaic techniques in Ravenna. Erro’s paintings combine styles and quotes from various eras and genres into amusing satires on modern society. First one-person exhibition, Galleria Santa Trinita, Florence. In 1958 moved to Paris and made first collages. Musée National Betzalel, Jereusalem; MoMA, Haifa. 1962 Happening with Jean Jacques Lebel, Galerie Cordier, Paris. Published the first Mécanifeste in Venice. In 1963, visited the United States where he directed happenings. 1964 First exhibition in the US, Gertrude Stein Gallery, New York. 1969 ARC, Paris. 1974 Venice Biennale, Le Monde en question, Arc, Paris.1978 Retrospectives: Listafn Reykjavikur, Kjarvalsstaoir, Reykjavik, Parco, Tokyo. 1981 Lunds Kunsthalle. 1985 ARC, Paris, 1991 Biennale d’Art Contemporain, Lyon. 1994 Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh.
