American sculptor. Studied Literature, later, Fine Arts at Middlebury College, in 1974-75, at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. The following year, settled in New York. Influenced by Minimalists such as Donald Judd and Carl André, began to concentrate on sculpture. Gober held his first one-man show in 1984, at the Paula Cooper Gallery and worked with the painter Kevin Larmon and on collective projects with Christopher Wool, Sherrie Levine and Meq Webster, among others. In the mid 80s and early 90s, Gober presented everyday objects, working on them so as to create installations which are full of poetry, eroticism and ironic allusions imbued with a strong visual and theatrical presence. His emphasis on the personal and the fragility of humanity, at a time when a theory of appropriation predominated in New York, brought him acclamation both in the United States and in Europe.
