Biography

Born in Lisbon in a family of artists, his grandfather was the water-colourist Ricardo Hogan and his uncle the painter Álvaro Navarro Hogan. 1930-39 He attended the Lisbon School of Fine Arts which he abandoned to attend a night school at the National Society of Fine Arts (SNBA). He co-founded the Portuguese Engraving Cooperative “Gravura” in 1957, in Lisbon, where he directed engraving courses Hogan taught at AR.CO, Lisbon between 1976- and 1981. 1951 First solo exhibition at SNBA, Lisbon, 1983 Retrospective exhibition, Beja Selection of group shows: 1947-49 General Fine Arts Exhibitions, SNBA. In 1949 he won a prize for Painting. 1953 “Salão da Jovem Pintura”, Galeria de Março, Lisbon. 1953 and 1957 Portuguese representation to the S. Paulo Biennale. 1957 1st Fine Arts Exhibition of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. 1961 Prize for Painting at the 2nd Fine Arts Exhibition of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon 1970 International Exhibition, Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, EUA, I Biennal of Seul, South Korea. 1986 “Le XXème au Portugal”, Brussels, 3rd Fine Arts Exhibition of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon.
