Biography

Was born in Vila do Conde, North of Portugal. He wrote poetry under the name Saúl Dias and his plastic language and poetic writings intermingled and complemented each other. He attended classes at the Oporto School of Fine Arts between 1919 and 1921 as a worker.student and graduated as a civil engineer from Oporto University in 1928. In 1936 he held his first solo exhibition at the National Society of Fine Arts (SNBA). His writings, which had been collected and edited in the book “Poetic Wroks” received the Critics Prize in 1980. At the beginning his painting had a strong expressionist flavour, as from 1936, Júlio concentrated mostly on drawing and water-colours continuing to develop the lyrical component, and from the 70’s onwards his work showed cubist inspiration.
