Biography

Was born in Lisbon where he attended Architecture and Painting at the Fine Arts School of Lisbon (ESBAL). He exhibits in Portugal and abroad, since 1958. In the beginning of the 60’s he moved to Paris where he lived until 1983. The representation of light is the central preoccupation of his work, in his painting, in the black and white drawings and in his sculpture pieces as well. Group exhibitions (selection) 1965 IV Bienal de Paris, 1967 Salon de la Jeune Peinture, M.AM., Paris, Portuguese Contemporary Art, 1972 Hudson River Museum, New York, 1974 “Au delá de l’image”. Gallery de Bellechasse, Paris, 1976-77 “Contemporary Portuguese Painting”, Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris, and “Grands et Jeunes d’Aujourd’hui, Grand Palais, Paris, 1986 “Le XXème au Portugal”, Brussels. Prize for Drawing at the III Fine Arts Exhibition of Calouste Gulbenkian, Foundation, Lisbon, 1986, and AICA-SEC Prize, Lisbon, 1988. He has made ceramic tiles for the Pontinha and Chelas subway stations in Lisbon, and a sculpture named “Ocean Piece” for the Washington Subway.
