Biography

German artist. She studied in Weimar between 1915 and 1918 and, in 1918-19, established her own studio there. In 1919, she married Robert Michel and the couple moved to Vockenhausen. From the beginning, she looked for new abstract forms and new materials for her artistic production. In the same year, she produced collages where she combined her form of perception with a particular poetry. In 1922, her paintings and collages had a scientific and factual conception. She collaborated with El Lissitzky and Kurt Schwitters and, in 1928, became a member of  "Societé Anonyme" and participated in several exhibitions in the United States. The Surrealist tendencies that appeared in her 1921-23 drawings were combined with the bases of the Constructivist compositions in her paintings and drawings from the thirties. The masks, animals and plant formations from this period appeared again in the last ten years of her career. Between 1937 and 1939, she had her studio in London. She had various one-woman shows, and participated in several collective exhibitions in London, New York and Germany. After her death, in Vockenhausen, there were several retrospective exhibitions of her work, namely at the Annely Juda Fine Art Gallery, London, Liatowitsch, Basel and Milan, among many others.
