Biography
French painter born in Romania. Between 1925 and 1927, he studied at an art school in Bucharest and, between 1927 and 1929, at the Art Academy in the same city. In 1930, he settled in Paris where he met Tanguy and he joined the Surrealist group, breaking away from them eight years later. In 1947, he was responsible for the organisation in Paris of the Surrealist Exhibition in which he actively participated with two of his sculptures, Large Banner. In 1951, he moved away from Surrealism and developed a lyrical abstract style. He lived in Frankfurt and Brussels and, in 1958, he received the Copley Foundation prize. He regularly showed his work at the Salon de Mai and the Salon des Surindépendants.
