English painter born in London, associated with Pop Art. Studied at the Chelsea School of Art, London, from 1955 to 1960 and at the Royal College of Art, London, from 1960-63. In 1964 he participated at The New Generation, Whitechapel Gallery, London. 1963-71 lectureship at the Chelsea School of Art. Early still life and landscape paintings mainly influenced by Léger and Magritte. Caulfield painted till the mid-60s with brilliant domestic gloss paints on hard fibreboard. In 1965 participated at the Biennale des Jeunes, in Paris. Applied silk-screen printing to his paintings. In 1979 developed a trompe-l’oeil realism. First exhibition in the United States in 1966, at the Robert Elkon Gallery, New York. The following year, Jeunes Peintres Anglais, Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels¸ Pop Art, Hayward Gallery, London. Retrospectives at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, in 1981-82 at the Tate Gallery, London, and in 1992-93 at the Serpentine Gallery London. Lives in London.
